Dear All Students,
This course provides an advanced overview of the genetic and genomic basis of root–microbe interactions, with a particular focus on crop systems. We will explore how plant roots interact with soil microbiomes to regulate nutrient acquisition, stress resilience, and growth performance. Key topics include plant–microbiome signaling, rhizosphere ecology, multi-omics approaches (transcriptomics, metabolomics, and microbiome profiling), and the genetic architecture underlying plant–microbe interactions. Case studies from maize and other crops will be discussed. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and critically evaluate current research on root–microbiome interactions, and gain insights into experimental and computational approaches used in this field. The course consists of lectures and interactive discussions based on recent literature. A basic background in plant biology and molecular genetics is recommended.
Course Schedule and Structure
This course consists of three coordinated modules integrating lectures, omics data analysis, and practical training:
1. Genetics and Genomics of Root–Microbe Interactions
• Time: Mondays, 08:30–10:00
• Period: 13 April – 13 July 2026
• Location: EG-5, Seminarraum 85 (WZWS85), 4318.EG.005
2. Omics Data Analysis of Root–Microbe Interactions
• Time: Wednesdays, 14:00–17:00
• Period: 20 May – 10 June 2026
• Location: EG-7, Seminarraum 86/87 (WZWS86/87), 4318.EG.007
3. Practical Training of Root–Microbe Interactions
• Time: Wednesdays, 14:00–16:00
• Period: 17 June – 7 July 2026
• Location: EG-7, Seminarraum 86/87 (WZWS86/87), 4318.EG.007
The Wednesday sessions are organized in two consecutive phases, with omics data analysis in the first phase followed by practical training in the second phase.
