We will revisit the axioms of quantum mechanics and will understand their ingredients from a mathematical perspective. This journey will take us through basic concepts in topology, measure theory, and functional analysis.
We will learn the following concepts
- the mathematical definition of a separable Hilbert space as a Banach space with a canonical norm that admits an orthonormal Schauder basis,
- the Lebesgue measure and the L^2 space,
- unbounded, self-adjoint operators and trace-class operators on a separable Hilbert space
- the spectral theorem and Stone's theorem for self-adjoint operators
Before taking this course, you should have attended:
- Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Theoretical Physics 3)
- Linear Algebra, Analysis I-III (or similar, e.g., Mathematics for Physicists I-IV)
The course will take place on Tuesdays, 10:15 - 11:45, in the following rooms:
- 20.10.: room 4.310 in the Physik-II building
- 27.10.: room 3024 in the Physik-I building
- 03.11.: no proseminar
- 10.11.: no proseminar (due to the Student General Meeting)
- From 17.11. onwards: room 4.310 in the Physik-II building
We will start the course on Tuesday, 13th of October 20206. Please contact Alexander Hahn if you have any questions.
