After participating in the course Aquatic Microbiology, the students are able to...

1. describe the functions of microorganisms

2. quantify and identify microorganisms from aquatic systems

3. to estimate the abundance of microorganisms in the environment and in technical systems

4. creating reports and imparting knowledge

5. carrying out laboratory protocols

Audit methods

The exam is delivered in the form of a laboratory work consisting of a report (70%) and a final presentation (30%). In the presentation the basic knowledge of the function of microorganisms in the environment as well as in technical systems is tested. In the clearly structured report of the practical course (introduction, methods, results, discussion) the students show that they have understood the essential contents, methods and results for the identification and quantification of microorganisms in aquatic systems and can summarize them accordingly.

Learning activities

Essential learning content on the function and occurrence of microorganisms in aquatic systems is taught in the form of short lectures (20%) and supplemented by independent literature studies on the methods to be performed in the laboratory (20%). The detection and identification of aquatic microorganisms in the laboratory (60%) is illustrated with practical experiments. In small groups, selected laboratory protocols of microbiology are learned, applied and documented.
